Wellington police are responding to a "serious" incident in the Wellington suburb of Newlands.
Police have put up cordons close to Kingsbridge Place and are encouraging residents to avoid the area.
Video from the scene shows an ambulance behind the cordon and armed police officers in front of police tape.
Newshub reporter Alexa Cook said there are six armed police, two ambulances and what looks like the armed offenders squad.
Resident Ruth Mead told Newshub she has seen scenes like these on the news but didn't expect to see them down her street.
"Six shots real quick, like 'boom boom boom boom boom boom', and like I said to my neighbour 'I've been here for 20 years, never seen this many cops'.
"It was terrible," she added.
She said a police officer told her police will be at the scene for a couple of days.
"It's pretty scary."
