A man is dead after he was shot by police in Wellington's Newlands on Tuesday afternoon.
Police were called to Kingsbridge Place at 3pm after receiving a report of a family harm incident.
"On arrival police made voice appeals to the man, who made threats to police and attempted to barricade himself inside the address with the victim," a police spokesperson said.
The spokesperson added police then fired "multiple shots" at the man from outside the property.
"Officers immediately rendered medical attention to the man and requested ambulance assistance, however the man died a short time later."
A woman at the address was found with "non-life-threatening" injuries and was treated at the scene by ambulance staff. A young person at the address wasn't injured, police add.
Acting Wellington District Commander Inspector Tracey Thompson said police will remain at the scene for the coming days.
"There will be an increased police presence in the area in the coming days as we conduct a scene examination and make enquiries."
Police will undertake a formal identification and will provide support to the man's family. Insp Thompson added the officers involved will also be supported.
The Independent Police Conduct Authority will be notified and a critical incident investigation is underway, Insp Thompson said.
