The two-car crash happened on State Highway 29A in Matapihi just after 11 pm last night.
Two other people were taken to hospital in a serious condition.
The road was closed until 4 am but has now reopened, police said.
In South Auckland, ambulance officers treated nine patients following a two-car crash in Ōtara late last night.
They took four people to Middlemore Hospital as a result of the smash on the Southern Motorway about 11.30pm.
The other five had minor injuries.
In Waikato, four people were injured, one critically, in a crash in Te Awamutu.
Police said their car hit a tree at a roundabout on Ōhaupō Road shortly after midnight.
The serious crash unit is investigating.
