A person is missing in the water at Maruia Falls in Murchinson on the South Island.
Police said in a statement one person was pulled from the water at 12:10pm, but another is still missing.
A rescue helicopter has been dispatched to the area and Search and Rescue staff have bene notified.
Emergency services are attending to the rescued swimmer.
Maruia Falls is a 10-metre waterfall that was created after the Maruia River was diverted due to an earthquake.
The Nelson Tasman website advises against swimming or getting close to the water at the popular scenic spot.
