The Corrections department called police nine times when drones were flown near prisons this year.
The department said the incidents happened at six prisons, but were not able to divulge which ones for security reasons.
It said a ground and perimeter search was conducted each time in case the drones were carrying contraband, but none was found.
Eight of the drones were seen by prison staff, while one was only heard.
