Police have found a man they were looking for after another person was found with gunshot injuries near Matamata earlier on Tuesday.
Waikato East Area Commander Inspector Dean Anderson said the man is being spoken to by police in relation to the shooting. The victim remains in a serious condition in hospital.
"Police are still in the area making enquiries and conducting a forensic scene examination," Insp Anderson said.
"Police would like to thank local residents for their cooperation and assistance."
Police aren't looking for anyone else in relation to this.
Police said earlier on Tuesday that they were called to Waghorn Road in Wardville near Matamata at just after 1:35am.
Insp Anderson said local police were supported by the armed offenders squad and the Eagle helicopter.
