Sleepout demolished, roof uplifted after small tornado on Kāpiti Coast near Wellington

A sleepout has been demolished and roof has been uplifted after a small tornado hit the Kāpiti Coast near Wellington.

Police told Newshub they received a report of a roof being uplifted at an address on Nicholas Place in Waikanae Beach at 11:12am.

Police said no one was injured.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) told Newshub they've received two reports of damage after a small tornado went through the Kapiti Coast area on Wednesday morning.

The first report was in the Paraparaumu area, where falling trees demolished a sleepout at a property near Otaihanga.

The second report was at Waikanae Beach where a roof was lifted.
FENZ said no one was injured.

It comes after MetService issued fresh weather warnings for large parts of the South Island on Wednesday as a front moved south over New Zealand.

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for Nelson, Buller, Westland and Fiordland from 10:30am to 3pm on Wednesday.

MetService warned there is a chance of a small tornado.

"Unstable northwesterlies and thunderstorms are affecting the west of the South Island today," MetService said.

"There is a moderate risk of severe thunderstorms bringing damaging wind gusts of more than 110km/h and a slight chance of a small tornado."

The North Island won't escape the bad weather with MetService issuing a severe thunderstorm watch for Northland, Auckland, Great Barrier Island, Coromandel Peninsula, Waikato, Waitomo and Taranaki.

The watch is in place from 6am to 12pm on Thursday with MetService warning wind gusts of this strength can cause some structural damage, including trees and power lines, and may make driving hazardous.

MetService also warned there is a slight chance of a small tornado for those areas.
