Temperatures are forecast to drop across New Zealand as a cold change sweeps up the country.
On Saturday, northerly winds across the top of New Zealand keep milder nights for the North Island. But for the South Island, southwest winds bring colder air to the far south and mean some frosty nights.
Then on Sunday these southerly winds push up and across the country, with a MetService graphic showing New Zealand covered by cold air until at least Wednesday.
"Temperatures for the lower North Island will barely make it into the double digits with some areas likely to be the coldest they've been during the day this year," MetService says.
"The Wairarapa temperatures on Monday will be 5C below their average for the time of year, maxing out around 7 or 8C."
As these southerly winds flow northwards, snow is predicted to fall as low as 900 metres for the South Island on Sunday and 1000 metres for a period for the North Island.
A road snow warning has been put in force for potential snow on the Desert Road between 10am - 1pm on Sunday.
