Destiny Church leader Brian Tamaki is facing careless driving charges after he allegedly crossed a centre line and crashed into a car with two elderly people inside it in Rotorua.
The crash happened in May on Hamurana Rd and an elderly woman was taken to hospital, the Rotorua Daily Post Weekend reported.
Careless driving charges carry a maximum $3000 fine,
A police summary of facts, seen by the RDP Weekend, alleges Tamaki was driving a Foton vehicle at about 5pm on Hamurana Rd near State Highway 33 on May 6.
The summary alleges the elderly couple was travelling west when Tamaki's vehicle allegedly crossed the centre line and ended up in the wrong lane.
According to the summary, the elderly man tried to swerve but was unsuccessful and they collided, RDP Weekend reported.
"On 20 May, a 64-year-old man was issued a summons for careless driving in relation to a two-vehicle crash that occurred on Hamurana Road, Mourea, on 6 May," a police spokesperson told Newshub.
"He is next due to appear on 11 August.
"As the matter is before the court Police are unable to provide further information at this time."
Newshub has Tamaki's representatives for comment on the incident.
The report comes after Tamaki was linked to an anti-Government protest last weekend which shut down Auckland's Southern Motorway and blocked traffic for more than an hour.
Tamaki, along with three other senior Destiny Church members, including his wife Hannah, is also facing charges over allegations they violated the COVID-19 lockdown last year by organising a protest.
