Shocking footage has emerged of a man violently punching a female police officer in the face, leaving her unconscious in the middle of a road.
Video supplied to the New Zealand Herald shows the moment the 27-year-old man attempts to run from police before punching the female officer, knocking the officer off her feet and causing her to hit the ground head first.
The ordeal took place in the middle of a road in the Auckland suburb of Manurewa on Monday afternoon.
The video further captures the man attempting to approach a second officer, before a third officer tasers the man from behind.
The man then falls face first to the ground, while members of the public appear to rush over to the injured and unconscious officer on the road.
Counties Manukau Central Area Commander Inspector Alisse Robertson said in a statement that the man has been arrested and will appear in Counties Manukau District Court on Tuesday. Insp Robertson confirmed the man has been charged with intent to injure.
Police were initially called to an incident on Great South Road at around 12:17pm on Monday before the violent attack took place.
Insp Robertson said the officer involved is now off work recovering.
