The public is being asked to help find a man who allegedly broke into a central Auckland complex and sexually assaulted a woman on Sunday.
Detective Senior Sergent Martin Friend, of Auckland City, said the alleged assault happened at a residential complex on Albert St.
Friend said the victim is "incredibly shaken" and support services were being provided to her.
Police investigations so far had located the alleged offender boarding a bus in Birkenhead at 6:50pm on Sunday before getting off at Britomart just before 7:10pm, Friend said.
"The man has been in the central city and has eventually ended up at the residential complex on Albert St, where he has entered the building at around 9:20pm," Friend said in a statement.
He then immediately left the area on foot, Friend said.
"There is an investigation underway into this matter, including ongoing CCTV enquiries to identify any further movements the offender has made," Friend added.
"Our priority now is to identify and locate this man.
"We believe the public will know who this man is and we need to hear from them.
"The public may have seen the offender moving around the city immediately after the city and we would ask they contact police if they have not already spoken to us."
Friend reassured residents the incident was being taken "extremely seriously", and urged anyone to report suspicious behaviour to 111 immediately.
