Two people have been transported to Rotorua Hospital after a road collapsed in the geothermal village in Whakarewarewa, Rotorua.
Aukaha News producer Kereama Wright, who was at the scene on Thursday, spoke to Newshub and said there's now a large hole in the road.
"There is a hole in the road about two metres wide and one metre in length and nearly two metres in depth."
Wright said locals had noticed steam coming out of the road about a week ago and a cordon had been put in place to make sure people didn't walk over the area.
"The entire area is closed off to all vehicles, so there are some locals who live in the village who have had to park their vehicles on the other side of the bridge outside of the cordon."
Wright said he spoke to a local on Thursday afternoon who "heard screaming" coming from the area.
St John said two ambulances and one manager responded to the incident at 2:23 pm on Thursday.
Two people were treated at the scene and taken to Rotorua Hospital. One was in a critical condition and one was in a moderate condition.
