A mountain guide has captured incredible footage of an avalanche on the estern side of Mt Ollivier and Mt Kitchener.
Tai Naka, who works for Alpine Guides based in the Mt Cook Village, told Newshub the temperatures in the region dropped on Tuesday after several days of torrential rain.
"This is definitely one of the biggest rainfall in a short period of time... I've been living here in Mt Cook Village for about six years... The amount of avalanche we saw today is significantly large."
Images captured by Naka - Winter Operation Manager for Alpine Guides - show a wall of snow moving down the mountainside as snow falls in the surrounding area.
The weather in the region has been so bad that State Highway 80, the road that leads to Mt Cook Village, remained closed overnight due to a large slip blocking the road.
"Since Sunday afternoon, it's been raining heavily in Mt Cook Village," Naka told Newshub.
A MetService update showed Mt Cook Village was one of the wettest areas of New Zealand on Monday, with 411mm of rain in just 24 hours.
