An Auckland high school has been forced to close for two days after a wild brawl between students on Wednesday.
Police were called to a "disorder incident" at Papakura High School at 2:19pm.
Police located the students "having an altercation, which grew as more students joined in", a police spokesperson said.
"Police spoke with the principal, and a decision was made by the school to go into lockdown while the incident was contained."
"The school reopened shortly after 3pm, after the group was dispersed by police and there were no further incidents of note."
Papakura High School principal Simon Craggs told Newshub the school will remain closed on Thursday and Friday to give his staff time "to investigate and for emotions to return to normal within the school".
"We are extremely disappointed that an incident like this happened on school grounds as we strive to make our school environment a safe place for everyone," he said.
"We will be taking time to investigate what happened and determine our next steps. We will liaise closely with the Police and the Ministry of Education to ensure that we act appropriately in response to this."
Police said enquiries are ongoing to determine the cause of the incident, and the students involved.
"Police will continue to have a presence in the area around the school over the next few days," the spokesperson said.
