Dozens of Levin residents were asked to evacuate their homes on Thursday as police responded to a nearby incident.

The police incident, which involved only one person, happened at a house on Bledisloe St during the afternoon.

"Police evacuated residents from their homes in Bledisloe Street, Levin and surrounding areas," the Horowhenua District Council said on Facebook.

"While this is a Police matter and we're unable to comment, we would like to let you know that those that were evacuated and cared for at Te Takeretanga o Kura-hau-pō, are now either staying with friends and whānau, or Council has arranged temporary accommodation."

Newshub has contacted police for more information.

Horowhenua district mayor Bernie Wanden told Stuff that about 80 people were evacuated and were at a welfare centre the council had set up for them.

"We are waiting for some communication from the police in terms of what is the current situation," he said.

The District Council also posted on their Facebook that people are to follow instructions from police and stay away from the area.
