Heavy rain and severe gales will lash parts of the North Island over the coming days, while the South Island will be on alert with more wild weather expected.

MetService warns of heavy rain and gales for parts of the country, with 15 weather warnings and watches issued across New Zealand.

A heavy rain watch is in place for Northland, Auckland, Mount Taranaki, Bay of Plenty and the ranges of northern Gisborne.

The watch is in place until Thursday evening, with MetService warning of a brief period of heavy rain, which could approach warning criteria.

Parts of the North Island will also get battered by severe gales, with a strong wind watch issued for Northland, Auckland, Great Barrier Island, Tararua District, Wairarapa and Wellington.

The wind watch is in place until Thursday evening, with MetService warning of severe gale in exposed places.

South Island:

The South Island will be on alert after MetService issued a strong wind watch and heavy rain and road snowfall warning for many areas.

It comes just a few days after the West Coast and top of the South Island were battered by heavy rain as the region starts a massive clean-up.

The latest stats from Nelson Civil Defence showed 134 homes were red-stickered, 93 yellow-stickered and 144 white-stickered.

MetService said a cold front is slowly moving up the West Coast, which will bring heavy rain to the region.

An orange heavy rain warning is in place for Westland south of Otira until 5pm on Wednesday, with 90mm of rain expected.

"Heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly. Surface flooding and slips are also possible and driving conditions may be hazardous," MetService warned.

A heavy rain watch is in place for Tasman until Friday morning while a strong wind watch has been issued for Canterbury High Country until Wednesday afternoon.

A road snowfall warning is in place for some of the South Island's main roads. Arthur's Pass (SH73), Porters Pass (SH73), Lindis Pass (SH8) and the Crown Range Road are expected to see periods of snow on Wednesday and Thursday morning.
