Search and rescue teams have located a missing light plane near Mt Nicholson in the Southern Alps.

Search efforts began after the light plane went missing in the Southern Alps after leaving Franz Josef on Thursday morning.

The light aircraft was en route to Rangiora when it was reported overdue. There was one passenger on board, but no additional information about them or their condition has been given.

A spokesperson for Rescue Coordination Centre (RCCNZ) said they were notified by Air Traffic Control of the missing aircraft at 11am, signalling that RCCNZ's assistance may be required since the plane was overdue for its landing.

RCCNZ said in a statement the downed plane was found by a Christchurch-based rescue helicopter.

The RCCNZ spokesperson said that rough weather conditions are currently making it "too dangerous to access the area".

"RCCNZ is currently coordinating with partner agencies on next step for the response."
