A mountain climber's body has been recovered from Mt Ngāuruhoe.
The man had been climbing with a group when he fell into a gully on Friday night.
Police were notified shortly after 5pm by Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand that a personal locator beacon had been activated.
Although the Greenlea Rescue Helicopter was quickly able to find him, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
His body was successfully uplifted late on Saturday morning in a coordinated effort between police and members of the Ruapehu Alpine Rescue Organisation.
Relieving Response Manage Acting Senior Sergeant Shane McNally said in a statement he would like to thank all of those involved in the recovery efforts last night and this morning.
"While this is a tragic outcome, we are glad we can bring his body home for his loved ones and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time."
The man's death has been referred to the coroner.
