The rescue plan for a person on board a light plane that crashed in the Southern Alps has been put on hold due to dangerous weather.
The light aircraft left Franz Josef at 9am on Thursday and was en route to Rangiora when it was reported overdue. There was one passenger on board, but no additional information about them or their condition has been given.
The crashed plane was located Thursday afternoon near Mt Nicholson in the Southern Alps.
A spokesperson for Rescue Coordination Centre (RCCNZ) said overnight a plan was developed to try and reach the area but has now been put on hold due to winds being above a safe operating level for helicopters.
RCCNZ said another attempt will be made to reach the location of the crash when the weather improves and the situation will be assessed regularly.
