Wild weather will return to parts of New Zealand on Friday with heavy rain, strong winds and snow expected for some areas.
MetService is warning of a front moving northeast over New Zealand that will bring heavy downpours and northwest gales to the South Island and lower North Island.
"Over 200mm of rain could fall in the ranges which could cause rivers that are already running high to rise further," MetService meteorologist Stephen Glassey said.
"Significant snow melt may also contribute to rising rivers."
MetService has issued heavy rain warnings for Westland, Fiordland, Canterbury and Otago for Friday and Saturday.
Civil Defence Emergency Management has advised people to look out for slips and surface flooding.
Strong wind warnings were also in place for Canterbury, Otago and Southland - where northwest gales were expected to become severe from Friday into Saturday.
Wellington and Marlborough have also been told to expect strong winds on Saturday.
Meanwhile, parts of the South Island could get snow to low levels on Sunday. The North Island's Desert Rd and other high roads could also be impacted by snow.
As yet, however, MetService has not issued any severe weather warnings for the North Island.
"Although rainfall amounts for the North Island are not looking as impressive as the western South Island, there could still be watches or warnings issued for some places closer to the event," MetService said.
