Temperatures have plummeted across the country as the South Island experienced a freezing start to the day, while the North Island prepares for possible thunderstorms.
Jack Frost made another appearance on Wednesday morning as the many parts of the South Island woke to see a layer of frost outside.
WeatherWatch said high pressure brings settled conditions and clear skies to much of the South Island on Wednesday morning, meaning very frosty temperatures with some getting down to around -10 degrees about the Main Divide.
The lowest temperature is Mosgiel at -6.3 degrees.
Much of the South Island was experiencing freezing cold temperatures at 7am this morning.
Blenheim, Christchurch, Ashburton, Timaru, Wanaka, Queenstown, Milford Sound, Dunedin and Invercargill all experienced temperatures ranging from -1 to -6 degrees.
MetService is forecasting possible storms for Auckland and Whangārei later in the day.
A slow-moving front is likely to bring showers to parts of the upper North Island on Wednesday, however, warning amounts of rain are considered unlikely and the watch for heavy rain in Northland has been lifted.
MetService said showers are expected for Auckland, with possible thunderstorms.
Showers are also expected in Whangārei, with some heavy and possible thunderstorms for the city.
WeatherWatch said any thunderstorms that occur may produce localised heavy rain with intensities of 10 to 25 mm per hour.
The rest of the North Island is in for a fine day with a few showers expected in Gisborne, Hawke's Bay, Taumarunui, Wairarapa, Masterton and Wellington.
