Wellington's traffic lights are a little different to most in the country, with drag queens and a silhouette of the haka replacing the pedestrian's green man.
But it's a metal bar above the crossing buttons in the capital that's confused visitors and residents.
A Reddit user shared their confusion on the social media platform after they visited the capital and came across the metal bars above many crossing buttons.
"What are these for?!?!"
People have since weighed in, one user said the bar provides vibrations for the visually impaired.
One joked the bar provides a perch for pigeons, while another said it's there to lean on "after fighting the wind".
So Newshub went to the Wellington City Council (WCC) to set the record straight.
A spokesperson for the WCC said an increase in pedestrians kicking the call button, "some more vigorously than others" called for the metal device or now known as a 'callbox protector bar' to be installed.
The spokesperson added inside the callbox are "delicate components" that "do not respond well to be kicked".
"These protector bars help minimise our callbox maintenance costs and operational downtime."
And while the protector bar doesn't completely stop the call button from being kicked, it instead requires some precision when using one's foot to push.
But the hollow bar has provided an opportunity for people to stuff them with food items.
"I once found a raw piece of bacon hanging on one. Sadly I left it behind, and also couldn't push the button due to grossness," one said.
"I found a shrimp on one recently. Weird," another added.
