Emergency services are attending a fatal two-vehicle crash in Waikato.

The crash is believed to be between a car and a tanker, which was reportedly carrying hydrogen peroxide.

A police spokesperson said they were called to the crash on State Highway 1 near Tīrau at around 3:12pm.

Later on Monday, police confirmed one person has died following the crash.

The Serious Crash Unit is examining the scene, and the road is expected to remain closed for some time.

Waka Kotahi NZTA said there was a "significant chemical spill" which will require a complex clean-up.

Diversions remain in place and motorists are urged to avoid the area.
