Police and the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) have returned to a property in the Auckland suburb of Epsom on Friday morning after an old bomb was found in the area.

A police statement said cordons were back in place around the property on Pukenui Rd, after the NZDF explosive unit (EOD) was unable to remove the item on Thursday night.

"Police and EOD have now returned to the Epsom location and are currently evacuating properties in the area as a precaution to allow the EOD team to dispose of the item safely," the statement said.

The EOD would conduct multiple small detonations between 11am and midday to dispose of the item.

Residents in the surrounding area would possibly hear the sounds from the detonations, police said.

Diversions would be in place from the affected area on Friday morning.

"The public will notice a police presence in the area while the detonation takes place and until the area is deemed safe," the statement said, adding residents would be advised when it was safe to return home.

"We will provide a further update when available."
