The death of a seriously injured three-month-old baby in Auckland has sparked a homicide investigation.

Det Insp Shaun Vickers, of Counties Manukau, said the homicide probe was launched following the death of the baby, who was hospitalised with serious injuries on September 18 and died on Thursday.

Police said a 31-year-old man was charged last week with wounding with intent to injure and is due to re-appear in the Manukau District Court next month.

Further charges are being considered, police said.

"Our investigation remains ongoing, however as the matter is now before the court, we are unable to provide further comment," said Vickers.
