One person has died following a crash between a truck and car near Kaikōura on Tuesday morning.
In a statement, police said the crash occurred shortly before 6am on State Highway 1, Hapuku.
Police said one person died at the scene while a second person received minor injuries.
Police warned motorists to expect significant delays and to avoid the area.
"We thank drivers for their understanding and patience," police said.
Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) said due to a serious crash between Kiwa Rd and Blue Duck Rd, State Highway 1 will remain closed for several hours.
NZTA is asking for southbound traffic travelling between Picton and Christchurch to detour via SH6 from Blenheim, SH63, SH6, SH65, SH7, and SH1 at Waipara.
