Police are investigating an aggravated robbery in Kawerau after an armed man allegedly confronted security staff outside an ATM with a firearm and stole cash from their truck as they were trying to refill the ATM.

Detective senior sergeant Paul Wilson said police were alerted to the robbery on Onslow St at around 8:45am on Tuesday and the man left the scene in a maroon-coloured Nissan Maxima.

"We’d like to hear from anyone who may have been in the area at the time and who witnessed the robbery or may have seen the maroon-coloured Nissan Maxima vehicle," det snr sgt Wilson said in a statement.

He also added police have spoken to a number of witnesses but they are  asking anyone with information regarding the robbery to come forward.

"We also want to hear from anyone with dashcam footage from that area around that time, from the vicinity of 81-83 Onslow Street this morning between 8.30 and 9am," det snr sgt Wilson said in a statement.
