The officer of the ambulance involved in a two-vehicle crash near Cambridge has died, it has been confirmed.
The two-vehicle crash involved a car and an ambulance at about 3:40am on Wednesday. The driver of the car died at the scene.
A police spokesperson said later on Wednesday the ambulance officer, who was driving, had died in hospital and shared their thoughts with the families of the deceased.
The spokesperson said the circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.
St John told Newshub it responded to the crash with two ambulances, two rapid response vehicles, one clinical manager and one helicopter.
Hato Hone St John deputy chief executive ambulance operations Dan Ohs said in a statement the St John family are "devastated" by the news.
"We are grieving the loss of one of our own people, following a serious motor vehicle incident near Cambridge in the early hours of this morning."
Ohs said the patient transfer officer was critically injured by the crash and airlifted to Waikato Hospital on Wednesday morning.
"And despite a brave fight succumbed to their injuries and died with family by their side this afternoon," Ohs said.
"A registered nurse who was travelling as the attendant in the ambulance, was also transported to Waikato Hospital and is in a stable condition."
Ohs added the patient transfer officer was a well-respected and long-serving member of the Hato Hone St John whānau.
