Tractor enthusiasts gather in Canterbury to celebrate 175 years of the Massey brand

Tractor enthusiasts from around Canterbury gathered in Lauriston to celebrate 175 years of the Massey brand.

A fundraiser for the Mid Canterbury Vintage Machinery Club, the event brought together more than 100 tractors from across the region.

After three years of fundraising setbacks, the Mid Canterbury Vintage Machinery Club came up with this tractor rally.

"I thought well we've still got to do something to mark that anniversary so I decided we should have an open day and I put my few tractors out and opened it up to anyone else," said event organiser Anthony Hampton.

And tractors were still rolling in even after the event started.

"I was hoping to get to 100 and we've actually passed that now," Hampton said.

The love for Massey brought all ages out to take a look.

"It's a fantastic display of Massey Harris, Fergusons and Fergies from way back," one person said.

"It's probably one of the best selections of Masseys you'd see around in this area," another said.

"I think they're cool and... they're pretty nice to look at," a child said.

Tractors from 1928 to 2022 were on display, with the horsepower varying in grunt too.

The Ferguson TEA was also up for viewing. Commonly known as the 'Little Grey Fergie', it's the same one Sir Edmund Hillary used in Antarctica, minus the modified tracks and hubs to keep them warm.

In Hampton's personal collection, one stands out from the rest.

"There's an old green Pacemaker, that's my favourite tractor," Hampton said.

An old favourite for one of Massey's biggest fans.
