It all unfolded in seconds and new dramatic footage shows just how quick it happened when a school bus plunged over the Northwestern Motorway in Auckland on Friday morning.

A camera facing the busy motorway captured the moment when the school bus pulled onto Newton Rd overbridge and smashed through the Northwestern Motorway barrier into trees and bush.

Traffic came to a halt as the bus was left dangling over the edge of the motorway overbridge.

As a result of the crash one person was taken to Auckland Hospital with minor injuries, and 24 other people were treated for minor injuries at the scene.

Member of Waitematā's local board Glenda Fryer saw the crash on her way to Newmarket.

Fryer said on Facebook the scene looked "quite dramatic" and she hoped those onboard were okay.

It's believed the students onboard were pupils at St Marys. One parent at the school told Newshub "all the girls are fine".

Coachways New Zealand spokesperson Dave Marsden told the NZ Herald the bus crash was under investigation.

A police spokesperson said inquiries were ongoing and no charges had been laid at this point.
