If you're a North Islander hoping to enjoy a fine weekend, you're out of luck. MetService's heavy rain watches and warnings cover most of the top of the North Island.

The Auckland region, Northland and Great Barrier Island have been issued with a heavy rain watch from 1pm Friday to 8pm Saturday, with the wet weather expected to linger into Sunday too.

MetService meteorologist Angus Hines told Newshub it's been a wet Friday for Auckland already "but that's expected to amplify tonight".

"It will be raining more often than it's dry. A very wet start to the weekend [and] as school holidays start [too]."

And the wet weather is being shared around. MetService has issued the Coromandel Penisula, Bay of Plenty, Te Puke and Gisborne with a heavy rain warning.

For the Coromandel Penisula, Bay of Plenty and Te Puke, their heavy rain warning will begin at 3am Saturday and will expire 6am Sunday.

Gisborne and the Bay of Plenty east - their warning begins at 1pm Friday and expires 1pm Saturday.

The wet weather isn't just isolated to the top of the North Island, a low-pressure system approaching from the Tasman Sea will douse most of the North Island throughout the weekend.

For the South, a high-pressure system will bring dry weather to most of the South Island, and MetService hasn't issued them with any severe weather warnings.
