There were incredible scenes outside the Iranian embassy in Wellington on Friday as Iranian Kiwis took a stand for women's rights and a change in the regime.
It follows growing unrest in Iran, with many taking to the streets over the death of Masha Amini. The 22-year-old died in custody after she was detained by morality police for failing to wear her hijab correctly.
An estimated 50 Iranian Kiwis gathered outside the embassy this afternoon, visibly emotional and holding signs that read "women life freedom".
"This is Iranian New Zealand, let us give our freedom and our voice to raise our concerns to you," yelled one protester.
Some protesters took to ripping the embassy's golden sign off its concrete wall and covering it in red coloured handprints before police took it away.
Protesters then piled the Iranian flag, hijabs and the country's passport into a grill BBQ and set it all alight.
Green MP Golriz Ghahraman was one of the many protesters taking a stand and told Newshub the protest is about democracy, women's rights, rainbow rights and anyone "tortured by the regime".
"What we are calling for is the New Zealand Government to do all we can to ensure that the violence ends and for regime change," she said.
"And we need to expel this ambassador right here."
