Horror weekend on roads: Four people die after separate crashes

A person has died after a serious crash near Tauranga overnight, continuing a disastrous weekend on New Zealand's roads. 

Police said emergency services responded to a serious two-vehicle crash at around 5:50pm Sunday.

One person died while another was taken to hospital in a serious condition. 

The crash happened at the intersection of Te Puke Highway and Strang Road with the road remaining closed while an investigation is undertaken.

Less than two hours later, four people were involved in a two-car pile-up in Southland which critically injured two people. 

Meanwhile, police are continuing to investigate a fatal accident in Rakaia on Saturday night, where one person died, and five others were injured.

Crashes in Buller and Opotiki also killed two people.
