Magnitude 5.3 earthquake strikes top of South Island

A magnitude 5.3 earthquake has struck near the top of the South Island on Sunday afternoon. 

GeoNet said it had a depth of 53km and was located 30 km southwest of St Arnaud near Nelson.

The quake struck at 12:35pm and GeoNet described the shaking as 'moderate'.

Thousands of people reported feeling the quake on the GeoNet website, with the majority saying the shaking felt 'weak' or 'light'.

At the time of writing, 3739 people had self-reported to GeoNet as having felt the earthquake. Three said it felt extreme, 19 strong, 240 moderate, 1469 light and 2008 said it was weak. 

A few people commented on the quake with one saying it "felt strong in Murchison, Tasman". 

Another person said: "Knocked over the top of my beer can pyramid here in Nelson!!"

Someone else added, "I felt that one on the fourth floor. Had me under the desk and all".
