Most-targeted Michael Hill store temporarily closed after spate of burglaries, ram raids

New Zealand's most-targeted Michael Hill store is remaining closed in a bid to protect customers and staff from a spate of brazen burglaries.

The Takapuna Michael Hill store in Auckland will remain temporarily closed while the company works on security measures.

"Given the recent attacks on our Takapuna store, it will remain closed while we review our broader security options," Michael Hill CEO Daniel Bracken said.

"It is the most targeted store in our New Zealand portfolio, and therefore will remain closed for the immediate safety of our customers and employees - as always, safety is our number one priority."

The Takapuna store has been the target of multiple ram raids and smash-and-grab-style burglaries this year.

Last week and in August, the store's front doors were completely shattered in what was believed to have been ram raids.

In June, the same shop was hit with a brazen daylight robbery where offenders smashed countertops and placed jewellery into bags before fleeing in a car.

Other Michael Hill stores across Aotearoa have also been hit by a string of thefts, causing security measures to be rolled out across the country.

The shops will have security guards positioned at each store, fog cannons and alarm screamers, additional security cameras installed, personal staff alarms and further security measures at night.

"It's unacceptable that our staff and customers now live with this constant threat of attack and are now being regularly confronted with the level of destruction," Michael Hill chairman Rob Fyfe told Newshub last week.

Further to Michael Hill's increased security measures, staff and customers are offered counselling support when they find themselves on the receiving end of a burglary.
