Protester glues hand to road as demonstrators block major Wellington route

Incredible footage has emerged showing one of the climate action protesters' hand glued to State Highway 1 outside the Terrace Tunnel.

Footage shows the protesters' hand stuck to the road as police try to wriggle it free.

The demonstrator can be heard crying out in pain as officers try to free the man's hand.

One officer can be heard shouting "Does anybody have any nail polish remover" to the nearby crowd who had gathered by the road.

It comes as six protesters from Restore Passenger Rail sat on one of the busiest highways in Wellington and blocked traffic for almost two hours on Wednesday morning.

Traffic was brought to a standstill with some commuters getting fed up and taking matters into their own hands by confronting the protesters and trying to steal their large banner.

Police said a number of people will be charged in relation to the protest and they thank motorists for their patience.

It comes just two days after traffic was also brought to a halt as the same protester group climbed a gantry near the Bolton Street overbridge on State Highway 1 and hung a large banner reading: Restore Passenger Rail.
