A person has died and another is seriously injured after a crash between a truck and a van on State Highway 1 near Cambridge.
In a statement, police said the crash happened on SH1 near Hickey Rd at around 4:53am between a truck and a van.
Police said one person died at the scene and another has serious injuries.
St John said they sent three ambulances, one helicopter and a rapid response vehicle to the crash.
"We transported one patient, in a serious condition, to Waikato Hospital (by road)," St John said.
Police said SH1 will be closed and all motorists are asked to avoid this area until further notice with diversions in place.
One witness told Newshub a truck and a van collided on the bend at the intersection of SH1 and Hickey Rd.
A helicopter has now left the scene and traffic is backed up on SH1 in and out of Cambridge.
The diversion for drivers going north is at SH1 and Karapiro Rd, Cambridge, while the redirection for southbound traffic is at SH1 and Victoria Rd.
Newshub understands it's the same bend where a car and an ambulance collided last month, leaving two people dead.
"It's bad," a witness told Newshub.
"It's the exact location where an ambulance driver and another man died last month in a two-vehicle crash."
Police thank motorists for their patience while emergency services attend and work to clear the scene.
