While millions have fled the war in Ukraine only a brave few are heading into the country to provide much-needed humanitarian support.
Kiwi nurse Shannon Taylor left her job at Auckland’s Middlemore Hospital and since March has been waiting to head to Ukraine to work as a combat medic.
While Taylor's "excited" to provide much-needed help she said she "can't really believe it's finally happening".
Once Taylor arrives in Ukraine, it will take several days by train and car before she reaches her destination, and while she didn't say where that would be, she's expecting to see some heartbreaking scenes.
"There's a small team there who are going out I guess helping those whanau who are in need and stuck in these areas and are refusing to leave their homes," she told AM on Friday.
"We will go in there and try and make a relationship with them and try and guide them out to safety."
Taylor said she's "always dreamt of becoming a combat nurse", but previously didn't have enough experience to enter Ukraine.
"I have other experiences in other third world countries but not necessarily a war zone."
Taylor will board a flight on Sunday bound for Ukraine to provide vital health care to those at the forefront of Vldamirmi Putin's war.
