An Auckland man's been fined more than $50,000 for getting rid of a protected pōhutukawa tree on a beachside boulevard.

Cole Arnott had contractors chop down the tree on his Takapuna property in 2020, which breaches the Resource Management Act.

Two contractors involved with the axing are still before the court.
