Members of the Auckland car community are outraged after a boy racer skidded and crashed into parked cars at a popular park.
The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon at a meet-up of car enthusiasts at Michael Joseph Savage Memorial Park at Bastion Point.
Footage of the crash shows a black V8 Holden Commodore doing skids up Hapimana St before it hits cars parked on the side of the road. The car slams into a parked white vehicle with such force that it pushes it off its wheels and mounts the car behind it.
In another video posted to social media showing the aftermath of the crash, a man who owns one of the hit cars can be heard crying out: "My car, no! No! That's my dream car."
The person who took the video of the crash, who has asked to just go by his first name Scott, told Newshub cars were parked on the side of the road, which is what they do every Sunday at their car meet-ups. He said the Auckland car community has made it their gathering spot and most have agreed not to do "idiotic burnouts or skids" at the risk of damaging the environment and other cars.
He said the driver of the Holden didn't hang around long after the crash and went home after he was towed.
"The driver was not sad, he got out of his car and was chuckling in a way," he said.
Scott said the two cars that were hit are owned by two of his closest friends, "which brings a deep hatred to this situation".
The white BMW that was hit is a "complete write-off", he said, while the red Toyota MR2 just needs some "cosmetic fixes".
He said this incident will impact the safety of their car meets going forward.
"I'm really concerned about the overall reputation that this will bring to the 'boy racer' community, when in reality a lot of people really don't realise that we're just some dudes with cars," he said.
"We want a place to show them off and meet new people but people like the Holden driver are ruining our reputation."
Police confirmed they were called to the incident.
"At around 3:40pm on Sunday 20 November Police received a report of a collision involving several vehicles, on Hapimana Road, Bastion Point," a spokesperson told Newshub.
"Police attended, one vehicle was impounded and one person will be referred to Youth Services."
One person who was also at the meet-up, who has asked to remain anonymous, told Newshub there were other people doing burnouts in the same place on Sunday, just at a different time of day.
A video they shared shows a car drifting around a corner before it zooms up the road towards the car park.
They said the weekly car meet-ups are meant to be a relaxed few hours to hand out with friends and see some cars.
"Nobody wants people to do burnouts up there as there are always families around, but there is always going to be someone to ruin it."
