Police have revealed a man who died after being assaulted in Lower Hutt was violently attacked after what is believed to be a street altercation.

They are now appealing for information on two cars involved in the incident.

Craig McKelvie, 52, of Wellington, died after being assaulted in Lower Hutt on October 14.

He was found seriously injured at an address in Mason Street in Moera after police were called at around 10pm that night. He later died in hospital.

Police have been appealing for any information to help locate a knife involved in the incident and a black 2004 Honda Odyssey, registration JCT923, seen on CCTV footage in the area.

Detective Senior Sergeant Martin Todd said in a statement on Thursday, in addition to the Honda Odyssey, police are also appealing for information on a blue-coloured 2006 Mitsubishi Outlander.

Police have identified that both vehicles were in the Moera area around the time McKelvie was on Mason Street.

Ten 7 Aotearoa, a television series that gives viewers the chance to help solve serious crimes, showed the CCTV footage captured on the night of McKelvie's death.

It shows McKelvie leaving the McDonald's car park in Petone at 9:52pm in a blue Mitsubishi Outlander, which police believe had another passenger.

The Outlander is next seen on Randwick Road at 9:59pm followed by the Honda Odyssey.

Police said on the programme, the Outlander came to a stop on Mason Street and what they believe was the Odyssey parked behind it. McKelvie then got out of the car, there was an altercation and McKelvie ran to a nearby friend's house to seek help.

McKelvie died an hour later.

Police also said the weapon used was likely discarded in the area and urges residents in Moera to check their front yards.

Open Justice reported in the NZ Herald that McKelvie had a "career" of crime spanning from the 1980s to 2021, which started when he stole his dad's car as a teen.

McKelvie was subsequently sent to state care where he suffered abuse from those in charge of the boy's home.

He went on to a path of drugs and crime, Judge Bruce Davidson said, including drenching an elderly man with petrol and hitting him with a hammer in 2021. McKelvie was sentenced to three months of home detention after the attack.
