Givealittle for missing boy in Manukau Harbour hits $60k

A Givealittle page has been launched for a missing boy described as "beautiful" and "adventurous" who was part of the boating accident in Auckland's Manukau Harbour earlier this month.

Five people were onboard the boat when it capsized at around 7pm on November 6 near Clarks Beach.

Two made it back to shore, a third was rescued from the water and another was found dead.

A fifth person, a 10-year-old student named Ryder from Sandspit Road School, is still missing.

A Givealittle page has been created by Toni Adams - a family friend - with money going towards keeping the search going for Ryder.

"As much as we have had amazing police and search and rescue help, these will eventually limit and stop," the post said.

The family wants to keep the search going so Ryder can get on the "right track home to his Dad and family".

"If you are in the position to donate a small amount this is very much appreciated, every dollar counts," the posts said.

At the time of writing, the Givealittle page had so far raised just over $61,000 from 814 donors in two days.

Manukau Harbour is known to catch out boaties. This time last year three people died after their boat capsized near the Manukau Heads sand bar, considered to be one of the most dangerous in New Zealand.

This boating accident has put a spotlight back on water safety as we head back into summer.

"We've seen 11 more fatalities than this time last year. Last year was an absolute disaster. We've seen 68 New Zealanders lose their life so far this year," said Water Safety New Zealand chief Daniel Gerrard.
