The fireworks frenzy starts today as fireworks go on sale for the next three days ahead of Guy Fawkes.
But there are renewed calls for the private sale of fireworks to be banned to protect Kiwis and their furry friends.
SPCA science officer Dr Alison Vaughan told AM on Wednesday the charity supports a ban on private sales, instead favouring public displays.
"The SPCA does support public displays… because those are controlled [and] they're notified - people know they are coming.
"What we are concerned about is the private sale and use of fireworks because of multiple issues, not only them going off on multiple days but also risks for things like fires which we've seen most years… and also we have to be considerate of our companion animals but also of wildlife," Dr Vaughan said.
But not everyone is in favour of the fireworks ban with former National MP and Auckland Business Chamber CEO Simon Bridges telling AM later in the show he wants them to stay.
"I'm a big fan [of fireworks]," Bridges said. "I just have great memories growing up of my mum and dad doing fireworks at home. Yes, you've got to be responsible but I think it's a great Kiwi tradition actually."
So should New Zealand ban the private sale of fireworks?
