A man has been arrested after a person was fatally struck by a vehicle in west Auckland on Wednesday before fleeing the scene.
A police spokesperson said officers were called at about 12:20pm to a disorder incident in a carpark off Glendale Rd in Glen Eden, where a person was struck by a vehicle and later died.
The driver fled the scene, which sparked a manhunt for the offender.
Late on Wednesday evening, police said a search warrant was executed at an address in New Lynn where a 27-year-old man was arrested.
The man will appear in Waitakere District Court on Thursday charged with murder.
"Residents can expect an increased police presence in the area while an examination takes place," a statement said.
"Police would like to thank members of the public that assisted police in their investigation and contributed to a swift arrest."
Witness Kat McCormick told NZ Herald the person who was struck flew up onto the car's windscreen.
"He flew into his windshield. It killed him," she said.
McCormick said she followed the car after it didn't stop and claimed the driver waved a handgun out of the window.
"He pulled it out the side of his door," she told the NZ Herald.
Another eyewitness told Newshub he first realised something was wrong when he was taking his rubbish out and saw about a dozen people crowded around.
He said there was a woman in her 30s who was screaming and crying by the body.
The car involved had a cracked windscreen and there was a driver and a passenger in the vehicle, he added.
Police said the matter was now before the court and would make no further comment.
