The police national dive squad will search Waitaki waterways on Tuesday as the investigation into the murder of Anaru Moana continues.

Moana, 37, hasn't been seen since December 20, 2021 when he disappeared several hours after his mother died of cancer in a hospice in the south Canterbury town of Waimate.

He was last seen at his home in Mary St by his niece at about 6:30am. His phone and bank cards also disappeared.

Police confirmed in September a silver Subaru was a vehicle of interest, which was seen in the area where it's believed Moana was killed.

The Subaru was located burnt-out at the Waihoa River layby off SH1 on December 22, 2021.

The dive squad will search waterways near where the Subaru was found, police said on Tuesday.

Detective Inspector Joel Syme said police have been tracing the movements of those linked to the vehicle between the time Moana went missing and when the vehicle was disposed of.

Syme said good progress has been made by the investigation team in identifying those responsible for Anaru's death.

"Police remain committed to holding to account the person or persons responsible for Anaru's death," Syme said.

"We are also working hard to locate his body so we can return him to his whanau. We continue to urge anyone with information to contact Police, or alternatively contact Crime Stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
