Police investigating after 'unexplained death' of University of Canterbury student

An investigation is underway after the "unexplained death" of a University of Canterbury student.

Police officers responded to the death in Matipo St, Christchurch, that was reported at 3:50am.

A police spokesperson said an investigation to determine what happened is underway.

A University of Canterbury spokesperson said they understand a student has died and are waiting for confirmation from the police.

"We offer our deepest condolences to their family and friends," the spokesperson said.

"Based on the information we have, we've offered support and assistance to those immediately impacted and we have support in place for our student and staff community."

Students requiring support are urged to contact student care services.

Police said they are aware of the deep sense of grief in the Christchurch community, especially for the family and friends of the person who has died, who need space to grieve.

"We know that people have questions about what has happened, and Police are working hard to establish the circumstances that led to the death," a spokesperson said.

"While the investigation is underway we're limited in what detail we can provide."

Part of the street where the incident occurred has been cordoned off while a scene examination took place.

Members of the public were asked to avoid the area, police said.
