Police are not seeking anyone over the death of student Samuel Finnemore.
Finnemore was found unconscious near the intersection of Matipo and Elizabeth street at around 3:50am Tuesday.
At the scene, there was a broken front window which is believed to be his bedroom. Despite medical efforts to revive him the teenager died at the scene.
Police have launched an investigation into his "unexplained" death and a post-mortem examination was carried out on Wednesday.
On Thursday, Detective Senior Sergeant Damon Wells said a scene examination is now complete and police are continuing to treat the death as "unexplained".
"Early indications are that police are not looking for anyone else in relation to Sam's death," Snr Sgt Wells said.
Police have referred his death to the Coroner.
The Aucklander was living in Christchurch while he attended the University of Canterbury and was a champion snowboarder.
Finnemore's family said they were "devastated" to learn of his death, which was "just two days shy of his 20th birthday".
"He loved uni and recently turned his studies to geology, a subject he discovered only after coming to Canterbury," his family said in a statement. "He was well-liked, happy, and he cherished time with his many friends in Auckland, Christchurch and Wanaka."
His family said the teenager loved life and was always happy.
"We celebrate him and will remember him fondly."
In an email Newshub has seen, the University of Canterbury encouraged students who need additional support to reach out to Student Care.
"During this time of great loss, we are reminded of the importance of community. Losing a fellow member of our community can be very difficult," the email said.
"We offer our deepest condolences and are providing support to family and friends of Samuel."
