It is shaping up to be a wet start to the weekend for much of the country, with heavy rain warnings in place for a number of regions.
Metservice says a low front from the Tasman will sweep across the country over Friday and Saturday, bringing with it moist air and rain.
Heavy rain watches are in place for Auckland and Northland, with Metservice also warning there could be thunderstorms in the two regions.
"There is a moderate risk of thunderstorms about Northland. These thunderstorms may be accompanied by localised heavy rain with intensities of 10 to 25 mm per hour and strong wind gusts of 90 km/h, especially near the coast," Metservice said on its website.
"For Auckland, the Coromandel Peninsula, Waikato and Waitomo, there is a moderate risk of thunderstorms."
The rest of the country won't escape the wet weather with the front forecast to move down the country, hitting Wellington later on Friday and the South Island on Saturday.
The country's capital could also see thunderstorms and a heavy rain warning is in place.
On the South Island, there are heavy rain watches for Nelson, Canterbury and Dunedin overnight and into Saturday.
