The search and rescue operation for a person missing in the Manukau Harbour has been stood down for the day.
Five people were onboard the boat when it capsized around 7pm on Sunday near Clarks Beach.
Two made it back to shore, a third was rescued from the water and another was found dead.
A fifth person remains unaccounted for. It's understood they are a 10-year-old student at the local Sandspit Road School.
Police on Monday night said the search will resume on Tuesday morning.
"Police are actively engaging with the family and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time," a spokesperson said.
"Police will provide further updates about this incident as these become available."
Manukau Harbour is known to catch out boaties. This time last year three people died after their boat capsized near the Manukau Heads sand bar, considered to be one of the most dangerous in New Zealand.
This weekend's event has put a spotlight back on water safety as we head back into summer.
"We've seen 11 more fatalities than this time last year. Last year was an absolute disaster. We've seen 68 New Zealanders lose their life so far this year," said Water Safety New Zealand chief Daniel Gerrard.
The toll across the country already too high.
