SH1 reopens after freight truck crashes into Lake Taupō

State Highway 1 has reopened between Taupō and Tūrangi after a freight truck crashed into Lake Taupō.

The incident occurred near Bulli Point on the eastern shore of the lake, closing the road to all traffic from 4:30am on Sunday.

Waka Kotahi lifted the road closure at 10:45am today after the StraitNZ truck was pulled from the lake.

A dramatic photo posted to social media shows the truck upside down on the edge of the lake.

One person was taken to Taupō hospital with moderate injuries.
